Frequently Asked Questions
I have never practiced Kundalini Yoga before. Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes! Students new to Kundalini Yoga are welcome at most any class. Kundalini Yoga is not a linear practice, so we don’t necessarily consider students who are new to Kundalini to be beginners. Sometimes, something that is a challenge for a veteran Kundalini practitioner is easy for a new student and vice versa. If you have never attended a Kundalini Yoga class before, read our Tips for New Students.
What does a typical Kundalini Yoga class involve?
A typical class includes pranayama (breathwork), asana (posture), kriya (a series of exercises), mantra, and meditation.
Where is the studio?
Our physical premises closed on 2 October but we’re continuing online and will add some in-person, pop-up events around London. Check up our Upcoming Events page to find out what’s on.
What should I wear to class? Do I need to wear white?
We recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing made of natural fibres. As the class progresses you may become warm, so having layers is often useful. You can bring a shawl or blanket to keep you warm during the meditation segment of the class.
Kundalini Yoga practitioners often wear all white clothing as it is believed this can expand your auric radiance, giving you a strong and solid identity, and filtering any negative influences. However, you do not have to buy a new wardrobe or wear all white to practice Kundalini Yoga.
Why do people cover their heads? Do I need to cover mine?
No, it’s not a requirement to cover your head during class. Many teachers and practitioners of Kundalini Yoga wear a head covering - usually a cotton cloth or wrapped turban. This is based around the belief that the hair is alive and has an energy function. By covering the head and hair, we are training ourselves to be aware of and master our subtle energies. Covering the head provides a sense of containment and focus, enabling us to command the sixth center, the Ajna Chakra. It literally helps "keep your head together."
Do I need any special equipment?
No special equipment is required. But you may be more comfortable with a yoga mat for your practice. Yoga mats range in price and quality. A basic mat should serve you just fine. A mat will provide a little resistance and grip for certain postures like triangle pose. If you have trouble sitting cross legged on the floor, you might want a folded blanket, cushion, bolster or block to sit on. Also helpful for certain exercises like seated forward bends and bow pose is a strap. Alternatively, you can use a belt, a tie, or long scarf. Last but not least, you might want to have a jumper or shawl handy so you can cover up during deep relax and meditation.
Is there a minimum age for attending a class?
Children 12 years of age and older are welcome to attend classes. Sometimes, it’s okay to bring small children with you into class, provided they are able to sit quietly and are not disruptive to other students. Please request permission first as this may not be possible in all classes.
Can I practice Kundalini Yoga if I’m pregnant or have just given birth?
Kundalini Yoga is known to be an effective tool in pre and postnatal care. In most cases, provided there are no complications with the pregnancy, it is fine for a woman to practice Kundalini Yoga during the first 120 days of pregnancy. After 120 days, there are certain yogic practices that should be avoided. At JOY, we offer special Pregnancy Yoga classes, taught by teachers who have completed specialty training. We always recommend consulting your doctor before practicing.
Can I practice Kundalini Yoga if I have limited mobility or am recovering from an injury?
JOY aims to make Kundalini accessible to students of all abilities. Our Gentle Yoga class is specially designed for students who seek the benefits of Kundalini Yoga but who may feel physically challenged in some way. All Kriyas and meditations are suitable to practice while sitting on a chair or on the floor, with adjustments to fit everybody - regardless of your physical ability.
I’m on prescription medication, is it safe for me to practice Kundalini Yoga?
If you have an underlying physical or mental health condition, you should check with your doctor. Generally speaking, it is safe to practice Kundalini Yoga while taking prescribed medication.
I take recreational drugs and / or herbal medicine. Is it safe for me to practice Kundalini Yoga?
It can be dangerous to practice Kundalini Yoga under the influence of recreational drugs, including alcohol and herbal medicine, and we never recommend doing so. If you have taken ayahuasca, please do not practice Kundalini Yoga for at least 7-10 days. If you have consumed alcohol or marijuana please wait 48 hours before practicing Kundalini Yoga.
